Australian artists deliver 14 of the top 100 singles and 35 of the top 100 albums

The global juggernaut that is Adele’s multi-platinum smash ‘25’, has blitzed all comers on the ARIA 2015 End Of Year Albums Charts, named the highest selling album after just six weeks in the chart.  It is now certified 7 times platinum in Australia and has not left the peak position since its release.  ‘25’ features the hit single ‘Hello’, which lands in the ARIA 2015 End of  Year Singles Chart at No. 5.  Adele’s second album ‘21’ has finished at No. 32 for the year.

Mark Ronson’s track ‘Uptown Funk’, featuring the vocal talents of Bruno Mars, has proven to be the year’s most popular single - crowned No. 1 single of 2015 with a sales accreditation of nine times platinum.  It spent two weeks at number one, 15 weeks in the top 10, and did not leave the top 100 for the entire year.

Along with Adele, Justin Bieber is the only other artist to feature in the top 10 of both the singles and albums charts – his album ‘Purpose’ is the fourth highest selling album of 2015 whilst the single ‘What Do You Mean?’ finishes at No.9.

Albums from Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and Michael Buble enjoy their second (and in Buble’s case, fifth) straight year in the top 10 of the ARIA End of Year Albums Chart.

Sheeran’s ‘X’ was No. 1 in 2014 and is now at No.2, Swift’s ‘1989’ was No. 2 in 2014 and is now at No. 3, Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ has been at No.6 both years, and Michael Bublé’s ‘Christmas’ was the No. 2 album of 2011, No. 4 in 2012, No. 7 of 2013, No. 8 in 2014 and now No. 7 in 2015.

Australian artists have enjoyed a very successful year on the ARIA Charts. 35 local releases charted in the top 100, with an incredible 19 Aussie releases in the top 50, one up from 2014.  The best-selling Australian album has been delivered by country superstar Lee Kernaghan, demonstrating his enduring popularity over his long career. His ‘Spirit Of the Anzacs’ comes in at No. 8 overall, with a platinum accreditation having spent four weeks at No. 1 and nine weeks in the top 10.

Other local acts joining Lee Kernaghan in the top 20 are Sia, Vance Joy and The 12th Man.  Sia’s ‘1000 Forms Of Fear’ comes in at No. 14, whilst ‘Dream Your Life Away’ from Vance Joy lands at No. 16 and the legendary The 12th Man, a longtime feature of the ARIA End Of Year Charts, enjoys a position of No. 20.

Legendary Aussie rock band Cold Chisel underlined their enduring appeal with two albums in the Top 100, a feat matched by Human Nature and breakthrough act Troye Sivan.

Australian artists also fared well in the Singles Chart with 14 singles in the top 100, just four down on 2014 and exceeding the results of 2013 and 2012.  International success story Sia delivered the biggest local hit of 2015, with ‘Elastic Heart’ coming in at No. 14.  New artists Jarryd James and Grace delivered the second and third biggest Australian results, with ‘Do You Remember’ and ‘You Don’t Own Me’ featuring G-Eazy finishing the year at No. 22 and No. 26 respectively.

ARIA Chief Executive Officer Dan Rosen said today, “It’s been a fantastic year on the ARIA Charts, where we’ve been introduced to a crop of new artists, both local and international. It is very exciting to see 35 Aussie albums in top 100 this year. This is a great achievement for our local industry and shows how Australian music fans have embraced our local artists.

Congratulations to all of the artists that featured on the 2015 ARIA Charts, in particular Mark Ronson who topped the ARIA End of Year Singles Chart with ‘Uptown Funk’ and Adele who topped the ARIA End of Year Albums Chart with ‘25’.

After such a great year, I look forward to what lies ahead on the ARIA Charts in 2016.”
