Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms

The fifth studio album from British rock band Dire Straits holds a special place in ARIA Charts history. Brothers In Arms holds the record for the most weeks spent at #1 on the Albums Chart, having notched up a whopping 34 weeks at the top during 1985 and 1986. It debuted at #1 on release in May 1985 and spent 22 further weeks at the peak in 1985. It returned to the top for another 11 straight weeks in early 1986 when the band were in the midst of their 52-date tour of Australia in support of the album.

Brothers In Arms features the singles ‘So Far Away’ (#22 Jun. ‘85), ‘Money For Nothing’ (#4 Sept. ’85), and ‘Walk Of Life’ (#11 Mar. ‘86). Since its release it’s been accredited 17x Platinum.

Dire Straits topped the Albums Chart for one week with the follow-up to Brothers In ArmsOn Every Street (#1 Sept. ’91), before splitting in 1995. They last charted with the compilation Best Of Dire Straits And Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations (#35 Nov. ’05).

Eurythmics - WOuld I Lie To You?

The only #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart for British duo the Eurythmics came when ‘Would I Lie To You?’ spent two weeks in the top spot in June 1985. Released as the first single from the band’s fourth album Be Yourself Tonight (#1 Jun ’85), the track debuted at #36 in May and hit #1 for the first time in its fourth week in the top 50. In total, ‘Would I Lie To You?’ spent nine weeks in the top ten and 16 weeks in the top 50.

The Eurythmics followed ‘Would I Lie To You?’ with ‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)’ (#3 Sept. ’85).

The duo last appeared in the ARIA top 50 with ‘Don't Ask Me Why’ (#35 Jan. ’90). They split in 1990, later reforming between 1999 and 2005 and staging a one-off reunion in 2014.
