'ARIA Top 100 Albums & Singles 2012': Pink Scores Number One Album, Carly Rae Takes Out Number One Single

For the second time in three years, P!nk has taken out number one position on the ‘ARIA Top 100 Albums Chart’, securing 2012’s coveted peak position with ‘The Truth About Love’ from a star-studded list of challengers.  She also topped 2010’s list with her ‘Best Of’ package, “Greatest Hits … So Far”.  ‘The Truth About Love’ sold more than five times platinum across 2012, followed by One Direction in second place with sales exceeding three times platinum.

2011’s number one album, Adele’s ‘21’, also featured again in 2012, arriving at number 3, while last year’s second-place getter Michael Buble’s ‘Christmas’ came in at number four. Ed Sheeran rounded out the top five with his album ‘+’.

‘Call Me Maybe’, the smash hit single from Canadian star Carly Rae Jepsen, has held off the worldwide phenomenon that is ‘Gangnam Style’ by Psy, to take out top position on the ‘ARIA 2012 Top 100 Singles Chart’*, both acts selling close to nine times platinum in the process.

Guy Sebastian features in the top 10 again, proving himself to be one of the major success stories of the year – along with Birdy, he is the only artist in 2012 to contribute both a single and an album to the top 10 lists. This time he features with his epic track, ‘Battle Scars’ at No. 3, having achieved sales of nearly eight times platinum.  Joining Guy in the top 10 is Justice Crew, their former number one hit ‘Boom Boom’ at number seven with sales eclipsing five times platinum.

In other good news for Australia, local talent scored 27 of the placings in the top 100 albums, with Karise Eden leading the way at number six with ‘My Journey’, achieving sales in excess of double platinum, and Guy Sebastian achieving double-platinum with ‘Armageddon’ taking out the No. 9 position. This compares favourably with 22 Australian acts featuring in the Top 100 last year.  Further highlights include Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods at No. 13 with ‘Drinking From The Sun’, The Sapphires Soundtrack at No. 15, 360’s ‘Falling & Flying’ at 17 and Keith Urban at No. 19 with his platinum offering, ‘The Story So Far’, ensuring six Australian albums in the top 20.

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen, in summarising ARIA’s 2012 End Of Year Chart results, said, “It’s been a fantastic year on the ARIA Charts, where we’ve been introduced to new artists, both local and international, along with some exciting new music. Congratulations to Carly Rae Jepsen for achieving No. 1 on the ARIA Top 100 Singles Charts with her mega-hit ‘Call Me Maybe’. I’d also like to congratulate our honorary Australian, Pink, for her long-awaited album ‘The Truth About Love’ taking out the No. 1 spot on the ARIA Top 100 Albums Chart. Our Australian artists performed exceptionally well this year on the Charts, in particular Guy Sebastian, Missy Higgins, The Temper Trap, Justice Crew, Karise Eden, Reece Mastin and Hilltop Hoods, who all had #1’s. After such a great year, I look forward to what lies ahead on the ARIA Charts in 2013.”

One Direction was the only act to enjoy two albums in the top 10, with ‘Up All Night’ at No. 2 and ‘Take Me Home’ at No. 8.  P!nk contributed two albums to the top 100, with ‘Greatest Hits So Far’ at 42, as did another thirteen artists including Adele, Bee Gees, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters, Rihanna, Skrillex, Rod Stewart, Lady Antebellum, David Guetta, Florence + The Machine and Mumford & Sons, and local acts Cold Chisel and 2011 X Factor winner, Reece Mastin.

In summary, the top 5 on the 'ARIA 2012 Top 100 Singles Chart'* sees Carly Rae Jepsen at 1, Psy at 2, Guy Sebastian at 3, and Flo Rida at No. 4 and No. 5.

The top 5 on the 'ARIA 2012 Top 100 Album Chart'* sees P!nk at 1, One Direction’s ‘Up All Night’ at 2, Adele’s ‘21’ at 3, ‘Christmas’ from Michael Buble at 4, with ‘+’ from Ed Sheeran rounding out the five.
