SINGLES

Former One Direction member Zayn (Malik) takes his debut single “Pillowtalk” straight into the No.1 spot on the ARIA Singles Chart this week, also landing at the top in England, Ireland and Scotland too.

“Pillowtalk” becomes the 582nd No.1 single for ARIA (1983 to 2016), plus the 68th for the RCA Record Label, their last being Grace with “You Don’t Own Me” (25-May, 2015), whilst by debuting at No.1 it becomes the 110th song to enter at the top of the Australian Singles chart and the first of the year, as in 2015 there were three songs that opened their chart careers at the chart pinnacle, “Hello” by Adele (2-Nov), “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber (7-Sept) and his former band One Direction with their first and only No.1 here “Drag Me Down” (10-Aug), which means that Zayn has never appeared in a chart-topping single in Australia until now, as he was not on the bands track ‘Drag…’.

The song “Pillowtalk” becomes the first song to hit the top that features the word ‘Pillow’ in its title, whilst it’s the fourth to have a ‘Talk’ at the top, with the other three all being suggestive in their titles, “Let’s Talk About Sex” by Salt-N-Pepa (26-Jan, 1992), “Dirty Talk” by Wynter Gordon (17-Jan, 2011) and most recently “Talk Dirty” by Jason DeRulo (19-Aug, 2013). One unique chartifact that Zayn fulfills this week is to become the first artist ever to the hit the top of the Australian Singles chart with a name/act that starts with the letter ‘Z’ (pre or post ARIA).

Holding at No.2 for a second week is Flume with “Never Be Like You” plus he debuts in the Top 30 with a new entry, whilst Charlie Puth is up one spot to No.3 with “One Call Away” and his debut album “Nine Track Mind” also debuts at No.8 over on the albums chart, and Charlie swaps places with the former No.1 “Love Yourself” (now 3xPlatinum in sales here and the new US #1 song this week) by Justin Bieber, meaning that it drops a spot to No.4, and another thing Charlie and Justin have in common is that they are two of the three acts this week who have both a single and album within both Top 10’s.

After a single week at No.1, Jonas Blue and Dakota fall four places to No.5 with their cover of “Fast Car” and scoring her first Top 10 hit with her first chart entry is Kiiara and “Gold”, which leaps up ten places to a new peak of No.6. Dropping two places apiece are Snakehips with “All My Friends” (now 2xPlatinum) and “Lush Life” by Zara Larsson (now Platinum) to No.7 and No.8 respectively.

After last weeks leap into the Top 10, Triple J Hottest 100 winner “Hoops” by The Rubens is up one spot to a new peak of No.9 and newly crowned Platinum in sales, whilst the second Top 10 debut for the week is the No.10 entry of “Work” for Rihanna and Drake. This becomes the 28th Top 10 hit for Rihanna and the second Top 10 and third Top 20 hit for the teaming of Rihanna and Drake, as they have previously sung “What’s My Name” (HP-18, peaked late Dec 2010) and “Take Care” (HP-9, peaked mid-Feb 2012). Rihanna also is the third act this week to have both a Top 10 single and album, as her new set “Anti” comes in at No.5, and this is also the ninth song to debut in the Top 10 for Rihanna, whilst it becomes the fourth Top 10 hit here in Australia for Drake.

UP

The first singles chart entry for twenty one pilots “Stressed Out” is at No.3 in the US this week and leaps up eighteen places here to a new peak of No.11 here, whilst the only other entrant to the Top 20 this week is Flo Rida with “My House”, which is up seven spots to No.20, whilst just outside of the twenty is Troye Sivan with “Wild” which is back up a couple of places to No.22 this week. With her new album debuting at the top of the ARIA Albums chart this week, Sia and her “Cheap Thrills” rise four places to a new peak of No.27 whilst zooming up twenty places to No.30 are ZHU, Skrillex and THEY with “Working for it”, and the final rising track is from G-Eazy with Bebe Rexha who are up three places to a new peak of No.38 with “Me, Myself & I”.

DOWN

The three songs leaving the Top 10 this week are led by Justin Bieber with “Sorry” (HP-2x5, WI10-14) down four places to No.12 whilst “Ex’s & Oh’s” (HP-5, WI10-4, now Platinum) for Elle King is down six to No.13 and finally falling eight to No.17 is DJ Snake with Bipolar Sunshine and “Middle” (HP-5, WI10-8). Shawn Mendes drops three places to No.15 with “Stitches” (now 2xPlatinum) and after peaking at No.14 last week “Keeping Score” for L D R U is back down two places to No.16 and scores its first certification by going Gold this week. “Hello” by Adele falls seven to No.18 and “Ocean Drive” by Duke Dumont falls six spots to No.21 and also falling out of the Top 20 are Justin Bieber with “What Do You Mean?”, down six to No.24, and “The Trouble with Us” by Marcus Marr and Chet Faker and “Downtown” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis both which fall twelve places each to No.31 and No.32 respectively. Zara Larsson and MNEK drop eleven to No.33 with “Never Forget You” which is now 2xPlatinum whilst Mashd N Kutcher tumbles down thirteen spots to No.34 with “My Sunshine”. “Lean on” by Major Lazer is back down eight to No.36, “The Girl is Mine” by 99 Souls is down three to No.39 and newly certified Gold in sales, “Flip it” for Charlotte Devaney and Snoop Dogg drops seventeen to No.47 with “Sweet Lovin’” by Sigala falls twelve to No.49 and is now certified Gold.

The third single released from the forthcoming second album for Flume entitled “Skin” debuts at No.23, the track called “Smoke & Retribution” features guest artists Vince Staples and Kucka and this now joins his current No.2 single “Never Be Like You” to become his fifth Top 50 hit. A few places lower at No.25 is the second entry this week for Drake entitled “Summer Sixteen”, which is also the fifth Top 50 entry for Drake, whilst he is also at No.10 on the new Rihanna track and at No.43 with his highest charting single in Australia “Hotline Bling” (HP-2). Last November One Direction debuted at No.29 with the third release from their “Made in the AM” album entitled “History” and now thanks to it being the official third single from the album and the recent video clip for the track being released, it helps it to return to the Top 50 this week by leaping up in at No.35

ALBUMS

The seventh studio album for local singer/songwriter/ingénue Sia entitled “This is Acting” becomes her second consecutive album to debut at the top of the ARIA Albums chart.

“This is Acting” becomes the 605th No.1 Album for ARIA (1983 to 2016), plus the 401st set to open in the top spot first week, whilst it is also the second for Sia’s record label ‘Monkey Puzzle’, as her 14th of July, 2014 set “1000 Forms of Fear” was the only other on her label. Plus like RuFuS last week, Sia now joins Madonna, Boy & Bear and 5SOS as the other acts this decade to rack up two weeks at the top from two separate No.1 albums. Sia was also at the top of the singles chart this very weekend back in 2012 here and in the UK. The Aussie No.1 was on the Flo Rida track “Wild Ones” (3rd of six weeks) and debuted at the top in England on the David Guetta song “Titanium” (1 week only).

In the No.1 Albums alphabetical listing, Sia lands a unique place between 33 1/3 for John Farnham and her previous No.1 album “1000 Forms of Fear”, and this is the first time that the word ‘Acting’ has appeared in a No.1 set (or even in the charts), plus only the second ‘This is’ after the Twelfth Man set “Tribute to Bill Lawry… This is Your Life” (Dec 1997) and the fifth overall with a ‘This’, the last album being “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga (30-May, 2011). The last solo Aussie female to make it to the top was Sia with her previous No.1 album back in July 2014 (ON-J was part of a duo in July 2015) and her third Top 10 album overall here. The album has so far opened at No.3 in England, No.5 in Ireland and No.9 in The Netherlands with Top 20 debuts in Italy and Belgium at the moment.

The rest of the top four from last week remains stable, with “25” by Adele at No.2, David Bowie with “Blackstar” at No.3 and his collection “Nothing Has Changed: The Best of” at No.4, which is newly certified Platinum in sales. The second of four Top 10 debuts this week is new at No.5, the eighth studio album for Rihanna entitled “Anti” which was a surprise release last Friday and features this weeks No.10 debut of “Work” featuring Drake. Of her six studio albums to chart here (the first one didn’t) this becomes her fifth Top 10 album and matches the entry position that Rihanna’s sixth album “Talk That Talk” achieved in its first week back in late November of 2011, her highest charting albums here so far have been her third and fifth sets “Good Girl Gone Bad” and “Loud” which both peaked at No.2. This new entry has also reached the highest in Australia so far; as it’s nearest overseas peaks have been No.7 in both England and The Netherlands this week.

RuFus fall to No.6 with their second No.1 album “Bloom” after a single week at the top, with their last album “Atlas” falling 1 to 4 in its second week on the charts back in August of 2013. Justin Bieber is down two places to No.7 with his “Purpose” set and the third Top 10 entry occurs at No.8, the debut album for Charlie Puth entitled “Nine Track Mind”, which also debuted in the Top 10 in England and New Zealand this week, and features his current No.3 single “One Call Away”. The “Molly” TV Soundtrack is back down two places to No.9 this week, but expect a big jump next week, as the first of the two part mini series screens this coming Sunday night, which will help boost the set next week. The fourth and final Top 10 debut this week is new at No.10, the thirteenth studio album for US act Dream Theater entitled “The Astonishing”, which is the bands sixth chart entry here, and their first to hit the Top 10. The band’s previous best effort was their self-titled twelfth album from late September of 2013 which debuted and peaked at No.15.

UP

The new single for Coldplay, their Superbowl appearance in the USA this weekend and lead singer Chris Martin’s Carpool Karaoke segment this past week all help to boost the bands album “A Head Full of Dreams” jumps back up five to No.12, whilst Kendrick Lamar is up eleven to No.14 with his former No.1 from March last year “To Pimp a Butterfly”. The twenty one pilots album “Blurryface” jumps up fourteen spots to No.25 now that they have a No.11 single in “Stressed Out” this week and halving its position from last week by leaping into the fifty at No.32 is Elle King with her debut album “Love Stuff”. James Bay is touring here at the moment and his album “Chaos and the Calm” jumps back in at No.37 whilst Jarryd James’ “Thirty One” set returns at No.42, whilst also back into the Top 50 is Melanie Martinez with her newly repackaged “Cry Baby” album to No.45.

DOWN

Two of the four big albums to leave the Top 10 this week start with Ed Sheeran and his “x” (HP-1x8, WI10-81) set, which is down three to No.11 and leaves the Top 10 for only the fourth time, whilst “1989” (HP-1x9, WI10-65) for Taylor Swift is down four to No.13 and leaves the Top 10 for only the second time, the last time was back in May of last year when it fell to No.12 for a single week, meaning that this week is its lowest chart placing in its 67 weeks on the chart. The two other Top 10 dropouts do so after only a single week within the ten, “Dystopia” (HP-6) for Megadeth is down sixteen places to No.22 and The Eagles collection “The Complete Greatest Hits” (HP-10) plummets forty-four spots to No.54 this week. Elvis’ “If I Can Dream” set is down five to No.17 and dropping six to No.19 and No.20 is the soundtrack for “Straight Outta Compton” and The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness” respectively. “Death of a Bachelor” by Panic! At the Disco is down fifteen places to No.26 and The Eagles highest charting album this week “Selected Works 1972 – 1999” is down five to No.27 and now Platinum in sales, with the groups “The Very Best of” down five also to No.38. 1D is down nine to No.29 with “Made in the A.M.” and “21” for Adele falls twelve spots to No.30, “Title” for Meghan Trainor is down nine to No.39 and the “Greatest Hits” for both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fleetwood Mac fall after their rebound last week to No.40 and No.43 respectively.

The fifth studio album for UK act Bloc Party is entitled “Hymns” and comes in at No.15 this week, their first album since their debut set to not debut within the Top 10, as their last three albums all entered first week within the Top 5. The next new entry at No.34 is the second release for Sydney five piece metalcore band Polaris and their set “The Guilt and the Grief (EP)” becomes their first ARIA Albums Chart entry, and the final Top 50 entry this week is the third studio album for US act Tedeschi Trucks Band, which is new at No.36 entitled “Let Me Get by”, and by coming in so high it has now become the bands highest charting album in Australia and their fourth entry overall (three studio and one live album).
