Rufus hit #1 with new album 'Bloom'

SINGLES

The English producer and DJ known as Jonas Blue takes his cover of “Fast Car” featuring Dakota to the top of the ARIA Singles Chart this week, making it the first new No.1 single for 2016, and also Australia becomes the first country to make it a chart-topping song too.

“Fast Car” becomes the 481st No.1 Single for ARIA (1983 to 2016), plus the nineteenth for the Virgin record label, their last being the November 2012 No.1 track “Don’t You Worry Child” for Swedish House Mafia. “Fast Car” is currently sitting in the Top 10 of England, Sweden (both #3), New Zealand (#5) and Ireland (#6) and just debuted at #14 in The Netherlands.

Another trend that Jonas Blue has perpetuated is the first No.1 single of the year is usually an act with their first chart entry and it becomes their only chart-topping single in Australia. Let me show you what I mean with the below list from 2000 onwards…

2000 – I Try – Macy Gray (10-Jan, 3 weeks)
2001 – Cruisin’ – Gwyneth Paltrow (8-Jan, 2 weeks)
2002 – Hero – Enrique Iglesias (14-Jan, 2 weeks) (never hit the top here again)
2004 – Hey Ya – Outkast (19-Jan, 2 weeks) (never had another #1 here)
2005 – Nasty Girl – Nitty (24-Jan, 2 weeks)
2007 – Irreplaceable – Beyonce (1-Jan, 3 weeks) (only solo #1 in Oz so far)
2008 – Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis (21-Jan, 4 weeks)
2009 – Burn – Jessica Mauboy (19-Jan, 1 week) (no more #1’s here yet)
2010 – Fireflies – Owl City (4-Jan, 5 weeks)
2011 – Dirty Talk – Wynter Gordon (17-Jan, 3 weeks)
2012 – Pumped up Kicks – Foster the People (16-Jan, 1 week)
2014 – Say Something – A Great Big World (10-Feb, 1 week)
2015 – Cheerleader – OMI (26-Jan, 3 weeks)
2016 – Fast Car – Jonas Blue feat Dakota (1-Feb, 1 week so far)

The missing years were 2003 in which we had Christina Aguilera, 2006 was Chris Brown and 2013 was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with their second of three #1’s in a row.

Last weeks highest new entry of “Never Be Like You” for Flume feat Kai is up a massive eight places to No.2 this week, and last week it became his first Top 10 hit in Australia, now it also becomes his first Top 3 single here, whilst the last #1 of 2015 of “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber drops two places to No.3 this week after seven weeks at the top, but it is still the #1 downloaded track in the country though.

Charlie Puth released his album “Nine Track Mind” on Friday, and before the album makes its debut next week, he lands a third Top 5 single in Australia this week as “One Call Away” leaps up seven places to No.4, following on from “Marvin Gaye” (#4) and “See You Again” (#1) both from April 2015. And with two songs leaping into the Top 5 its pushes last weeks songs down this week, with “All My Friends” for Snakehips, “Lush Life” for Zara Larsson (now Gold) and “Ex’s & Oh’s” for Elle King all dropping two places apiece to five, six and seven respectively.

Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” is at #2 on the streaming chart again this week, but within the Top 10 it drops a place to No.8, whilst also down one to No.9 is DJ Snake with Bipolar Sunshine on the track “Middle” which picks up a Platinum sales certification this week, whilst the song at No.10 has leapt up eighty places to score a new peak and its first week within the Top 10, “Hoops” by The Rubens, which was voted this past week as the No.1 song on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2015, later on I will be going through all of the songs that climb or scored a place in the countdown for last years biggest hits via the J’s.

Sigala and his “Sweet Lovin” drop twelve to No.37 and Fleur East with her “Sax” is down fourteen places to No.40. Hilltop Hoods don’t seem to be going any “Higher” with their latest track as it is down fifteen to No.42 and One Direction fall sixteen places this week to No.45 with “Perfect”, Rachel Platten drops fifteen to No.46 with “Stand by You” and Dawin is down ten spots to No.48 with his “Dessert”.

With the new Sia album “This is Acting” out on Friday (29th Jan) the album track “Cheap Thrills” becomes the third Top 50 hit from the album by debuting on the chart at No.33 this week after “Alive” (HP-10) and “Bird Set Free” (HP-36), and G-Eazy with Bebe Rexha take their song “Me, Myself & I” into land at No.41.

ALBUMS

The second album for local EDM act RuFuS becomes their second set to debut at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, as “Bloom” takes root at the No.1 spot this week. “Bloom” becomes the 604th No.1 album for ARIA (1983 to 2015), plus we hit a milestone as the new chart-topping album becomes the 400th set to debut in the top spot, whilst as it is the second No.1 album for RuFuS, it is also the second #1 for the record label ‘Sweat it Out’, as the first album for the act “Atlas” debuted and peaked at No.1 on the 19th of August back in 2013. Rufus are now tied with three other acts who have also racked up two #1 albums and two weeks at the top this decade on the list of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums, 2010’s’ with Madonna, Boy & Bear and 5 Seconds of Summer, who are also the last Australian act to take both of their albums straight in at No.1, just like Rufus have done this week.

After a single week back at the top last week Adele and her “25” album drops back to No.2 this week (and with Sia’s new album out now Adele might not return for a few more weeks yet after which is Rihanna and Kanye’s new album respectively), which also pushes “Blackstar” by David Bowie down one spot to No.3 this week. And by staying in the Top 10 for a third week it also becomes David’s longest running studio album since his 1984 set “Tonight” (HP-4) which also notched up three weeks within the ten, whilst his collection “Nothing Has Changed: The Best of” is back up one spot to No.4 and also lodging a third week in the ten, plus his Top 100 tally has halved this week from eighteen last week to only nine albums within the hundred this week.

“Purpose” by Justin Bieber is also down one spot to No.5 and the second NEW entry to the Top 10 this week is the fifteenth studio album for metal act Megadeth entitled “Dystopia”, which enters at No.6 and instantly becomes the bands highest charting album in Australia and their second to make it into the Top 10, as their only other entry-to-the-ten was with their sixth album “Youthanasia” (HP-9, peaked mid-November 1994), and overall this becomes their twelfth albums chart entry here (11 studio and 1 live set).

Ian “Molly” Meldrum was in the news this past week after taking a spill in Bangkok, but he also celebrated his birthday too, and the upcoming mini-series based on his Countdown years sees its soundtrack “Molly” rise up three places to a new peak of No.7 whilst on hold at No.8 and No.9 this week are “x” for Ed Sheeran and “1989” by Taylor Swift respectively. And after 20 weeks in the Top 50 (63 wks within the 100) The Eagles collection “The Complete Greatest Hits” is up four places to a new peak of No.10 after last weeks passing of co-founder Glenn Frey, and the album now becomes the bands tenth Top 10 album here.

UP

With The Rubens taking out the top spot on this years Triple J Hottest 100 for 2015, their parent album “Hoops” returns to the chart this week at No.15, and Tame Impala had quite a few tracks within the countdown also, two within the Top 5 actually, which helps their “Currents” album to rebound twenty-four places this week to No.16. Two further Eagles collections also jump up this week, with “Selected Works 1972-1999” rising thirteen spots to No.22 and “The Very Best of” climbing ten to No.33. Kendrick Lamar got his “King Kunta” (TW-32) track at #2 on the JJJ listing for last year, and that helps his album “To Pimp a Butterfly” to rise twelve to No.25 and ‘Greatest Hits” sets for Fleetwood Mac (#28) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (50 to 29) are also back up and into the Top 30. Cold Chisel rise back into the fifty at No.35 with “The Best of–All for You”, The Vamps just toured here, and their recent second album “Wake Up” (HP-23) returns to the Top 50 at No.36, whilst the new and first Top 30 hit for twenty one pilots helps their album “Blurryface” to leaps back up ten spots to No.39, whilst returning to the Top 50 at No.45 is Nirvana with “Nevermind”. Further albums that feel the JJJ effect are “Limit of Love” for Boy & Bear (returns to T50 at #32), “That’s the Spirit” by Bring Me the Horizon (back in at #40), Courtney Barnett with “Sometimes I Sit and Think…” which landed three songs within the J’s Top 100 (47 to 43), re-entering at No.46 is “Peace is the Mission” for Major Lazer and back into the fifty at No.49 are Gang of Youths with “The Positions”.

At the Disco of “Death of a Bachelor” (HP-3) drops eight this week to No.11 and leaving the Top 10 for the first time is Elvis Presley with “If I Can Dream” (HP-1x2, WI10-12) which is down five to No.12, whilst the third and final departed album is “Best of Bowie” (HP-6, WI10-2) for David Bowie which drops twenty places to No.26.
