Debuts for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Thy Art Is Murder, Sarah McLeod and more!

For the second week in a row, there’s a new Australian #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart with Sydney band Gang Of Youths taking out their first #1 and becoming the seventh Australian act to hit #1 on the ARIA Albums Charts in 2017 with second album Go Farther In Lightness (see below).

With ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ debuting at #44 on this week’s Singles Chart, Khalid’s American Teen has grabbed a new Albums Chart peak at #19.

Further down the chart this week, there have been moves by Calvin Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1 (up six to #21), Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic (up eleven to #23), The Weeknd’s Starboy (up five to #25), Taylor Swift’s 1989 (up eight to #31), Justin Bieber’s Purpose (up nine to #36), Queen’s Greatest Hits (up ten to #37) and Drake’s More Life (up four to #39).

Debuts:

#1: Gang Of Youths ‘Go Farther In Lightness’ – Sydney’s Gang Of Youths score their debut #1 on the ARIA Charts with Go Farther In Lightness. The band’s second album comes just over two years on from The Positions (#5 Apr. ’15). In between albums, the five-piece released the EP Let Me Be Clear (#2 Aug. ’16).

#4: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard ‘Sketches Of Brunswick East’ – Melbourne’s King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard release their third studio album of 2017, Sketches Of Brunswick East. A collaboration with Californian artist Alex Brettin (aka Mild High Club), it’s the follow-up to Murder Of The Universe (#3 Jul. ’17) and Flying Microtonal Banana (#2 Mar. ’17). King Gizzard & The Lizard plan on releasing two more albums before the end of the year.

#5: Thy Art Is Murder ‘Dear Desolation’ – With their fourth studio album, deathcore band Thy Art Is Murder hit the top ten on the ARIA Albums Chart for a second time. Dear Desolation is the Sydney band’s follow-up to Holy War (#7 Jul. ’15) and is their new chart peak. In 2016, they also charted with the split EP with American bands The Acacia Strain and Fit For An Autopsy, The Depressions Sessions (#38 Aug. ’16).

#6: Brand New ‘Science Fiction’ – The fifth studio album for Brand New gives the New Jersey band their first top ten on the ARIA Albums Chart. Science Fiction is the band’s first album since Daisy (#40 Oct. ’09) eight years ago.

#8: Neck Deep ‘The Peace And The Panic’ – Welsh pop-punk band Neck Deep crack the top ten for the first time with third album The Peace And The Panic. It’s the group’s second album to chart in the top 50, following on from second album Life's Not Out To Get You (#28 Aug. ’15).

#20: Sarah McLeod ‘Rocky’s Diner’ – Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod releases her second studio album as a solo artist, Rocky’s Diner. Recorded in New York, the album comes twelve years on from McLeod’s debut solo album, Beauty Was A Tiger (#32 Sept. ’05).

#26: Grizzly Bear ‘Painted Ruins’ – Grizzly Bear return with their first album in five years, Painted Ruins. The American indie band’s fifth album is their third to hit the ARIA top 50, having previously charted with Veckatimest (#41 Jan. ’10) and Shields (#17 Sept. ’12).

#30: Steven Wilson ‘To The Bone’To The Bone is the fifth solo album from British prog musician Steven Wilson. It’s his first solo work to hit the top 50. He last hit the chart when former band Porcupine Tree charted with the album The Incident (#35 Sept. ’09).

#35: A$AP Ferg ‘Still Starving’ – Rapper A$AP Ferg gets a second entry in the ARIA top 50 with Still Starving. The mixtape comes just over a year on from Always Strive And Prosper (#16 May’ ’16) and includes guest appearances by Migos, Snoop Dogg, French Montana, A$AP Rocky  and more.
