ARIA to launch Vinyl Albums Chart

ARIA reveals 2018 End of Year Vinyl Albums Chart.

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) is pleased to announce the launch of a new weekly Vinyl Albums Chart.

The launch of the new chart reflects Australia’s continued interest in music on vinyl. Sales from vinyl albums have been increasing for eight consecutive years, up 15% in 2018. The ongoing revival of vinyl demonstrates this format’s enduring power of reinvention and popularity.

Dan Rosen, Chief Executive ARIA said, “The renewed love affair of Australian music fans with vinyl albums has been a phenomenon over the last few years.”

“There is a major sense of nostalgia to the experience of vinyl. The format is tangible and collectable, often with original and numbered artworks.”

“Artists are increasingly using physical formats such as vinyl as a way to give their fans a substantial way of showing their fandom, often working hand in hand with the digital and streaming version for the artist.”

The first Official ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart will be unveiled on Saturday 13th April at 5pm and published on ariacharts.com.au. In another first, to coincide with Record Store Day taking place this Saturday 13th April 2019, ARIA reveals the 2018 ARIA End of Year Vinyl Albums Chart, with Queen’s Greatest Hits taking out top honours.

Australian artists feature strongly across the ARIA End of Year Vinyl Albums Chart, with 31 local album releases finishing in the Top 100.

The highest position achieved by an Australian act comes from ARIA Award winners, Gang of Youths with their 2017 ARIA Album of The Year winning album Go Farther In Lightness, which landed at #6 overall.

Three other local acts join Gang of Youths in the Top 20: Tame Impala’s Currents comes in at #12, while Flow State by Tash Sultana lands at #18 and Powderfinger’s celebrated 1998 release Internationalist at #19. Gang of Youths appear for a second time in the Top 20 with their release, MTV Unplugged (Live In Melbourne) at #20.
