The English producer and DJ known as Jonas Blue takes his cover of “Fast Car” featuring Dakota to the top of the ARIA Singles Chart this week, making it the first new No.1 single for 2016, and also Australia becomes the first country to make it a chart-topping song too.
“Fast Car” becomes the 481st No.1 Single for ARIA (1983 to 2016), plus the nineteenth for the Virgin record label, their last being the November 2012 No.1 track “Don’t You Worry Child” for Swedish House Mafia. “Fast Car” is currently sitting in the Top 10 of England, Sweden (both #3), New Zealand (#5) and Ireland (#6) and just debuted at #14 in The Netherlands.
Another trend that Jonas Blue has perpetuated is the first No.1 single of the year is usually an act with their first chart entry and it becomes their only chart-topping single in Australia. Let me show you what I mean with the below list from 2000 onwards…
2000 – I Try – Macy Gray (10-Jan, 3 weeks) 2001 – Cruisin’ – Gwyneth Paltrow (8-Jan, 2 weeks) 2002 – Hero – Enrique Iglesias (14-Jan, 2 weeks) (never hit the top here again) 2004 – Hey Ya – Outkast (19-Jan, 2 weeks) (never had another #1 here) 2005 – Nasty Girl – Nitty (24-Jan, 2 weeks) 2007 – Irreplaceable – Beyonce (1-Jan, 3 weeks) (only solo #1 in Oz so far) 2008 – Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis (21-Jan, 4 weeks) 2009 – Burn – Jessica Mauboy (19-Jan, 1 week) (no more #1’s here yet) 2010 – Fireflies – Owl City (4-Jan, 5 weeks) 2011 – Dirty Talk – Wynter Gordon (17-Jan, 3 weeks) 2012 – Pumped up Kicks – Foster the People (16-Jan, 1 week) 2014 – Say Something – A Great Big World (10-Feb, 1 week) 2015 – Cheerleader – OMI (26-Jan, 3 weeks) 2016 – Fast Car – Jonas Blue feat Dakota (1-Feb, 1 week so far)
The missing years were 2003 in which we had Christina Aguilera, 2006 was Chris Brown and 2013 was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with their second of three #1’s in a row.
Last weeks highest new entry of “Never Be Like You” for Flume feat Kai is up a massive eight places to No.2 this week, and last week it became his first Top 10 hit in Australia, now it also becomes his first Top 3 single here, whilst the last #1 of 2015 of “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber drops two places to No.3 this week after seven weeks at the top, but it is still the #1 downloaded track in the country though.
Charlie Puth released his album “Nine Track Mind” on Friday, and before the album makes its debut next week, he lands a third Top 5 single in Australia this week as “One Call Away” leaps up seven places to No.4, following on from “Marvin Gaye” (#4) and “See You Again” (#1) both from April 2015. And with two songs leaping into the Top 5 its pushes last weeks songs down this week, with “All My Friends” for Snakehips, “Lush Life” for Zara Larsson (now Gold) and “Ex’s & Oh’s” for Elle King all dropping two places apiece to five, six and seven respectively.
Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” is at #2 on the streaming chart again this week, but within the Top 10 it drops a place to No.8, whilst also down one to No.9 is DJ Snake with Bipolar Sunshine on the track “Middle” which picks up a Platinum sales certification this week, whilst the song at No.10 has leapt up eighty places to score a new peak and its first week within the Top 10, “Hoops” by The Rubens, which was voted this past week as the No.1 song on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2015, later on I will be going through all of the songs that climb or scored a place in the countdown for last years biggest hits via the J’s.
Selena Gomez scores her second highest charting single in Australia this week as her new track “Hands to Myself” jumps up seventeen places to No.13, her highest placed track so far is “Good for You” (#10x2, August 2015). L D R U jumps eighteen spots to No.14 with “Keeping Score” and Kiiara leaps seventeen spots to land at No.16 with her track “Gold”, the only other country charting this song at the moment is Denmark, where it debuted at #18 this past week. The current US and Canadian Top 10 single “Roses” by The Chainsmokers featuring Rozes is up a massive twenty spots to land a new peak of No.17.
The two tracks leaving the Top 10 this week are “Hello” by Adele (HP-1x6, WI10-13) which is down five places to No.11 and the current UK No.1 single for a second week is “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes (HP-4x4, WI10-10) which here is down three places to No.12. JB’s “What Do You Mean” is down six to No.18; Zara Larsson also drops six and is down to No.22 this week with “Never Forget You”, whilst WSTRN left the Top 10 last week with “IN2”, which now leaves the Top 20 this week, dropping eight to No.23. Troye Sivan and his “Youth” are down seven to No.24 (he did perform it on Ellen this past week) and “Here” by Alessia Cara tumbles twelve places to No.25, whilst the other “Fast Car” for Tobtok and River is down seven spots to No.26 this week. “Flip it” for Charlotte Devaney and Snoop Dogg falls nine to No.30 and down eleven is The Weeknd with “In the Night” and “Lay it All on Me” for Rudimental and Ed Sheeran to No.33 and No.35 respectively.
