Check out what was #1 on the ARIA Charts 27 years ago!

ALBUM

Daryl Braithwaite - Edge

Released in November 1988, the second solo album from Daryl Braithwaite, Edge, was a comeback of sorts. Braithwaite had released his first solo album Out On The Fringe in 1979 during a time when his group Sherbet (also known as The Sherbs) had broken up. Following the permanent split of the group in 1984, Braithwaite left the music business for a time.

His comeback began with the release of the single ‘As The Days Go By’ (#11 Sept. ’88). Edge debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at #39. It hit the #1 spot in its 28th week on the chart, staying at the top for three straight weeks. Three more single followed the album’s release: ‘All I Do’ (#23 Dec. ’88), ‘One Summer’ (#8 Apr. ’89) and ‘Let Me Be’ (#26 Jun. ’89).

Edge spent 47 weeks in the top 50 and reached #5 on the 1989 ARIA End Of Year Albums Chart. It was accredited 4x Platinum.

Braithwaite’s follow-up album, Rise, also reached the ARIA top ten, peaking at #3 in August 1991. It featured the #1 single ‘The Horses’ (#1 May ’91). He last charted with Forever The Tourist (#47 Oct. ’13), his first top 50 appearance in nearly 20 years.

Single

Bangles - Eternal Flame

American quartet The Bangles spent three non-consecutive weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart in May and June 1989 with ‘Eternal Flame’. The band’s second Australian #1 single came from their third studio album, Everything (#7 Jul. ’89). It debuted at #39 in April and reached the top spot in its eighth week on the chart. It was also #1 in its tenth and twelfth week on the chart. In the intervening weeks, ‘Eternal Flame’ was displaced at the top by Bette Midler’s ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ (#1 Jun. ’89).

‘Eternal Flame’ hit #4 on the 1989 ARIA End Of Year Singles Chart and received a Platinum accreditation.

The Bangles first topped the ARIA Singles chart with ‘Walk Like A Egyptian’ (#1 Feb. ’87), which spent two weeks at #1. They last charted with the single ‘Be With You’ (#37 Aug. ’89).
