Check out what was #1 on the ARIA Charts 34 years ago!

Culture Club - Colour By Numbers

With their second studio album, British pop band Culture Club took out their first #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Colour By Numbers spent seven non-consecutive weeks in the top spot. It debuted at #1 and spent five weeks there in October and November 1983 before returning to #1 for two more weeks in July and August 1984. In total, the album spent 36 weeks in the top ten and 56 weeks in the top 50.

Singles released from the album include ‘Church Of The Poison Mind’ (#4 Jul. ’83) ‘Karma Chameleon’ (#1 Oct. ’83), ‘Victims’ (#4 Feb. ’84), ‘It's A Miracle’ (#14 May ’84) and ‘Miss Me Blind’ (#26 Jul. ’84).

Culture Club also appeared on the ARIA Albums Charts with Kissing To Be Clever (#11 Jul. ’84), Waking Up With The House On Fire (#2 Nov. ’84), From Luxury To Heartache (#22 May ’86).

CULTURE CLUB - Karma Chameleon

During Colour By Numbers’ initial five week run at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Culture Club was also dominating the Singles Chart with ‘Karma Chameleon’. The album’s second single debuted at #18 at the start of October 1983 before hitting #1 for the first time in its fifth week in the top 50. ‘Karma Chameleon’ spent a total of 12 weeks in the top ten and 20 weeks in the top 50.

It was Culture Club’s only #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Prior to the establishment of the ARIA Charts, ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’ spent six weeks at #1 in early 1983.

Culture Club followed ‘Karma Chameleon’ with ‘Victims’ (#4 Feb. ’84). The group’s last appearance in the ARIA top 50 was with ‘God Thank You Woman’ (#48 Aug. ’86), released around the same time they split for the first time.
