Culture Club - Colour By Numbers

With their second studio album, British pop band Culture Club took out their first #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Colour By Numbers spent seven non-consecutive weeks in the top spot. It debuted at #1 and spent five weeks there in October and November 1983 before returning to #1 for two more weeks in July and August 1984. In total, the album spent 36 weeks in the top ten and 56 weeks in the top 50.

Singles released from the album include ‘Church Of The Poison Mind’ (#4 Jul. ’83) ‘Karma Chameleon’ (#1 Oct. ’83), ‘Victims’ (#4 Feb. ’84), ‘It's A Miracle’ (#14 May ’84) and ‘Miss Me Blind’ (#26 Jul. ’84).

Culture Club also appeared on the ARIA Albums Charts with Kissing To Be Clever (#11 Jul. ’84), Waking Up With The House On Fire (#2 Nov. ’84), From Luxury To Heartache (#22 May ’86).


Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

UK pop duo Wham! snared their only Australian #1 single when ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ spent seven weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart in mid-1984. Lifted from their second album, Make It Big (#1 Feb. ’85), the single debuted at #50 at the start of July. It cracked the #1 spot for the first time in its fourth week in the top 50. In total, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ spent 12 weeks in the top ten and 19 weeks in the top 50.

1984 was a big year for the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. They also hit the top five with singles ‘Freedom’ (#3 Nov. ’84) and ‘Last Christmas’ (#3 Dec. ’84). Michael’s first solo single ‘Careless Whisper’ (co-written with Ridgeley) also spent four weeks straight weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart in September and October.

Wham! split in 1986. Their last appearance in the ARIA top 10 was with the single ‘Edge Of Heaven’ (#2 Aug. ’86).
