John Farnham - Whispering Jack

John Farnham scored the first of his nine #1 albums to date on the ARIA Charts when Whispering Jack spent 25 weeks in the top spot during 1986 wand 1987. Farnham’s twelfth studio album debuted at #23 in October 1986 and hit #1 for the first time in its fifth week in the top 50. It spent the last five weeks of 1986 at #1 and was #1 for 20 of the first 26 weeks of 1987.

Whispering Jack featured the singles ‘You’re The Voice’ (#1 Nov. ’86), ‘Pressure Down’ (#4 Mar. ’87) and ‘Touch Of Paradise’ (#24 Apr. ’87). The album has been accredited 24x Platinum.

John Farnham has also topped the ARIA Albums Chart with Age Of Reason (#1 Jul. ’88), Chain Reaction (#1 Oct. ’90), Then Again… (#1 Nov. ’93), Anthology 1 (#1 Oct. ’97), 33 1/3 (#1 Aug. ’00) and The Last Time (#1 Dec. ’02). With Olivia Newton-John, he’s scored #1s with Two Strong Hearts (#1 Jul. ’15) and Friends For Christmas (#1 Dec. ’16). The duo and Anthony Warlow scored a #1 with Highlights From The Main Event (#1 Dec. ’98).

John Farnham was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 2003.


Aretha Franklin & George Michael - I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)

Soul legend Aretha Franklin took out her only #1 on the ARIA Charts when she teamed up with George Michael on the single ‘I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)’. Taken from the album Aretha (#33 Mar. ’87), the single debuted at #37 in February 1987 and reached #1 in its fifth week in the top 50.

As well as spending four straight weeks at #1, ‘I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)’ spent 10 weeks in the top ten and 16 weeks in the top 50.

As well as being Franklin’s only #1, it was her last appearance in the top 50. George Michael also scored #1 singles with ‘Careless Whisper’ (#1 Sept. ‘84) ‘Faith’ (#1 Jan. ’88), ‘Jesus To A Child’ (#1 Jan. ’96) and ‘Fastlove’ (#1 May ’96).
