SOundtrack - Romeo + Juliet

The soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet spent nine weeks at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart between January and March 1997. The album debuted at #5 at the start of January and hit the top spot for the first time in its second week in the top 50. Its run at #1 was broken by two separate weeks where the album dropped to #2. In total, Romeo + Juliet spent 24 weeks in the top ten and 38 weeks in the top 50.

Tracks from the album that charted included Kym Mazelle’s ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ (#11 Feb. ’97), The Cardigans’ ‘Lovefool’ (#11 Mar. ’97) and Des'ree’s ‘I'm Kissing You’ (#17 Apr. ’97).

The Romeo + Juliet soundtrack was accredited 5x Platinum. It was #2 on the 1997 ARIA End Of Year Albums Chart.

In May 1997, the follow-up album Romeo + Juliet Volume 2 was released. It peaked at #2 and featured Quindon Tarver’s cover of ‘When Doves Cry’ (#3 Jul. ’97).


No DOubt - Don't Speak

American band No Doubt scored their only ARIA #1 single to date when ‘Don’t Speak’ spent eight consecutive weeks at the top of the Singles Chart in February and March 1997. The second single released from No Doubt’s third album, Tragic Kingdom (#3 Feb. ’97), ‘Don’t Speak’ debuted at #50 in December 1996. It hit #1 for the first time in the first chart of February 1997, the single’s eighth week in the top 50.

‘Don’t Speak’ spent a total of 13 weeks in the top ten and 19 weeks in the top 50. The single was #8 on the 1997 ARIA End Of Year Singles Chart and received a 2x Platinum accreditation.

No Doubt last appeared on the ARIA Singles Chart with ‘Settle Down’ (#41 Jul. ’12).
