ARIA announces 2017 End Of Year Charts

January 5, 2018

Ed Sheeran delivers a stellar double - highest selling single and album of 2017 with ‘Shape Of You’ and ÷ - and 8 entries overall.

Ed Sheeran has topped the ARIA 2017 End Of Year Albums Chart with ‘÷’, the album now more than seven times platinum, having spent 22 weeks at No. 1 across the year and remaining in the top 10 for the entire 43 weeks since release.

Highlighting the massive impact Ed Sheeran’s music has made over the last 12 months, he has eight entries across the ARIA 2017 End Of Year Singles and Albums Charts.  His 2014 album ‘x’ lands at No. 7 and 2011’s ‘+’ comes in at No. 12.  He also dominates the Singles Chart with an extraordinary three of the top 4 singles, with ‘Shape Of You’ a runaway success as No. 1 single of 2017 with a total of 15 weeks at the peak, followed by ‘Castle On The Hill’ at No. 3, ‘Perfect’ at No. 4 and ‘Galway Girl’ at No. 7.

Having topped the ARIA End Of Year Albums Chart back in 2013, P!nk makes a triumphant return with her new release ‘Beautiful Trauma’ coming in as the No. 2 album of 2017, spending its entire lifespan in the top 10 and selling more than three  times platinum.  Taylor Swift also makes a big impact, with ‘Reputation’ at No. 3 and already certified Platinum, whilst 2016’s chart-topper, Adele’s ‘25’, comes in at No. 4.

Soundtrack albums were in strong demand across 2017, with ‘Moana’ finishing at No. 5 and ‘Trolls’ at No. 6, and 11 soundtracks featuring across the top 100.  Michael Bublé’s much-loved ‘Christmas’ album has now spent 7 consecutive years in the Top 100 End Of Year Albums Chart, coming in at No. 8 in 2017 – it was the No. 2 album of 2011, No. 4 in 2012, No. 7 of 2013, No. 8 in 2014, No. 7 in 2015 and No. 5 in 2016.

The best-selling Australian album comes from iconic singer songwriter and ARIA Hall of Famer Paul Kelly.  His 23rd studio album ‘Life Is Fine’ finished the year at No. 14, after debuting at No. 1 back in August to deliver Kelly his first ever number one album.  Kelly ended 2017 with four ARIA Awards including Best Male Artist, with ‘Life Is Fine’ back in the top 10 for a tenth week and a total of 20 weeks in the top 40, easily exceeding Gold sales in the process.

Much loved performer Jessica Mauboy joins Paul Kelly in the top 20 with her certified Gold album ‘The Secret Daughter Season Two (Songs From The TV Series)’ at No. 20.

On the singles front, sliding in between Ed Sheeran’s tracks in No. 2 position with 13 weeks at No. 1 and selling in excess of 5 x Platinum, is ‘Despacito’ from Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.  2016’s highest sellers The Chainsmokers return at No. 5, this time joined by Coldplay on ‘Something Just Like This’. Pnau leads the Australian singles charge, with their Platinum hit ‘Chameleon’ coming in at No. 32.

Along with Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar is the only other artist to feature in the top 10 of both the 2017 End Of Year Singles and Albums Charts, single ‘Humble.’ at No. 8 and album ‘Damn.’ coming in at No. 10.

ARIA Chief Executive Dan Rosen, in commenting on ARIA’s 2017 End Of Year Chart results, said “Congratulations to the incredible Ed Sheeran for having both the No. 1 Album and Single this year.  It is a remarkable effort that has not been achieved by any artist since Eminem in 2002. Our Australian artists performed exceptionally well this year on the Album Chart, in particular Paul Kelly and Gang Of Youths who all had Number One Albums in 2017. With so much great new music being produced both here and overseas I can’t wait to see what lies ahead on the ARIA Charts in 2018.”
