The fifth month of 1993 saw Jane Campion’s The Piano win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival; Miss Puerto Rico, Dayanara Torres, won the Miss Universe pageant; Oasis were discovered and signed to Creation Records after forcing their way onto a gig line-up in Glasgow; and space jazz pioneer Sun Ra died at the age of 79.

The ARIA Charts saw an American rocker dominating the top spot on both the Albums and Singles Charts.

10. Wreckx-N-Effect - Rump Shaker

Harlem hip hop group Wreckx-N-Effect scored their only Top 50 appearance on the ARIA Singles Chart when ‘Rump Shaker’ peaked at #10 for one week in May 1993. One of the tracks co-writers was Pharrell Williams.

9. 2 Unlimited - No Limit

The title track from 2 Unlimited’s second album (#3 Jun. ’93) became the Dutch duo’s second Top Ten on the Singles Chart when it peaked at #7. Their biggest hit was with ‘Get Ready For This’ (#2 Apr. ’92).

8. The Four Seasons - December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)

Remixed by Dutch DJ/producer Ben Liebrand, this version of The Four Seasons’ track from 1975 peaked at #3 in March 1993. The original peaked at #2 in Australia.

7. Michael Jackson - Give In To Me

Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album (#1 Dec. ’91) spawned eight singles, four of which became Top Ten hits in Australia. Peaking at #4, ‘Give In To Me’, was the fourth Top Ten and second-highest charting after ‘Black Or White’ (#1 Dec. ’91). It featured guitar playing by Slash from Guns N’ Roses.

6. Peter Andre - Gimme Little Sign

Originally made famous by Brenton Wood in 1967, ‘Gimme Little Sign’ became Peter Andre’s first Top Ten hit when it was released as the second single from  his self-titled debut album (#27 Jan. ’94). Hitting #3, it remains his highest chart peak.

5. East 17 - House Of Love

‘House Of Love’ was the first of four Top Ten singles in Australia from East 17’s debut album, Walthamstow (#5 Apr. ’94). Just under a year later, they would score their sole #1 with ‘It’s Alright’ (#1 Feb. ’94).

4. Faith No More - Easy

Faith No More’s second #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart came when their cover of The Commodores’ 1977 hit ‘Easy’ spent two weeks in the top spot during May 1993. Their first #1 was with ‘Epic’ (#1 Sept. ’90).

3. Arrested Development - Mr. Wendal / Revolution

After ‘People Everyday’ peaked at #6 in February, alternative hip hop group Arrested Development scored their second Top Ten entry three months later with the double A-side ‘Mr. Wendal’ / ‘Revolution’. The latter song appeared on the soundtrack to the Spike Lee film Malcolm X.

2. Ugly Kid Joe - Cat's In The Cradle

A cover of the 1974 hit by singer-songwriter Harry Chapin gave American hard rock band Ugly Kid Joe their only #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart when it spent one week at the top in March 1993. It came from the band’s debut album America's Least Wanted (#7 Apr. ’93).

1. Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

For four weeks in April and May 1993, the same title and artist sat at the top of both the ARIA Albums and Singles Charts. The title track from Lenny Kravitz’s third album, ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’ spent a total of six weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart. It was Kravitz’s only track to hit #1 and one of his four Top Ten singles.
