Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain

Prince’s sixth studio album gave the late, great artist the first of his three #1s on the ARIA Albums Chart when it spent one week in the top spot in August 1984. The soundtrack to Prince’s first movie, Purple Rain debuted at #32 in late July. It jumped to #7 in its second week, #4 in its third week and topped the chart the following week.

In total, Purple Rain spent 13 weeks in the top ten. It’s been accredited 3x Platinum.

Three singles from Purple Rain charted: ‘When Doves Cry’ (#1 Aug. ’84), ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ (#10 Oct. ’84) and ‘Purple Rain’ (#41 Nov. ’84).

During his lifetime, Prince topped the ARIA Albums Chart with two more releases: Diamonds And Pearls (#1 Feb. ’92) and Love Symbol (#1 Nov. ’92).

Following Prince’s passing in April 2016, Purple Rain returned to the Albums Chart, peaking at #5. The title track peaked at #3 on the Singles Chart, overtaking its previous best.


Wham! - Wake Me Up BEfore You Go-Go

UK pop duo Wham! snared their only Australian #1 single when ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ spent seven weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart in mid-1984. Lifted from their second album, Make It Big (#1 Feb. ’85), the single debuted at #50 at the start of July. It cracked the #1 spot for the first time in its fourth week in the Top 50. In total, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ spent 12 weeks in the Top Ten and 19 weeks in the Top 50.

1984 was a big year for the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. They also hit the Top Five with the singles ‘Freedom’ (#3 Nov. ’84) and ‘Last Christmas’ (#3 Dec. ’84). Michael’s first solo single ‘Careless Whisper’ (co-written with Ridgeley) also spent four weeks straight weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart in September and October.

Wham! split in 1986. Their last appearance in the ARIA Top 10 was with the single ‘Edge Of Heaven’ (#2 Aug. ’86).
